Up at dawn and ready to work
The rooster wakes the village at sunrise, and the sign carries that sense of punctuality and duty. Chinese astrology links the Rooster with diligence, honesty, confidence and an eye for detail.
Rooster people are described as organized, observant and frank, the kind who say what they think and expect high standards from themselves. Tradition also lists the price of that frankness: bluntness, perfectionism, and a fondness for being right or being noticed.
Interestingly, the Rooster hour is not dawn at all. It runs from 5 pm to 7 pm, the time when chickens return to the coop for the night.
The raft builder
In the race legend the Rooster could have flown part of the way, but it chose a smarter route. It spotted a raft at the river's edge and invited the Goat and the Monkey to share it.
The three cleared the weeds and crossed together, finishing eighth, ninth and tenth, with the Rooster taking tenth. The story credits the Rooster with practical sense and the ability to organize a team.
The Rooster across the five elements
Wood Rooster (the year starting in 2005, for example): described as warm, fair and community-minded, more relaxed about rules than most Roosters.
Fire Rooster (2017): the boldest and most outspoken Rooster, linked with energy, leadership and a strong sense of conviction.
Earth Rooster (1969, and next in 2029): tradition calls it the most practical and hardworking Rooster, careful, sensible and reliable.
Metal Rooster (1981): Metal is also the Rooster's fixed element, so this version is read as the most precise and principled, with very high standards.
Water Rooster (1993): the most easygoing Rooster, described as clever, articulate and better at compromise.
How tradition pairs the Rooster
The Rooster shares a harmony group with the Ox and the Snake. These three are associated with careful planning and steady effort, and folk astrology sees them as valuing the same things.
The Dragon is the Rooster's secret friend, a pairing of two proud and confident signs. Its clash sign is the Rabbit, across the wheel; tradition contrasts the Rooster's directness with the Rabbit's tact. See any pair on the Chinese zodiac compatibility page, which reports tradition only.
Checking a Rooster birth date
Every Rooster year is listed on this page with its exact start and end, based on the site's own Lunar New Year calculation, so you never have to guess from the year number.
A January or early February birth in a Rooster year number may belong to the Monkey, the animal before it. The Chinese zodiac calculator settles it. The elements page explains why Rooster years always carry a yin element.
