Big Three Calculator

Enter your birth date, time and place to get your Sun, Moon and rising signs together, each with its exact degree. Without a birth time we can still show the Sun and usually the Moon, but not the rising sign.

Why astrologers start with three placements

A full natal chart holds more than a dozen points, which can feel like a lot at first. Many astrologers suggest beginning with just three: the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant, nicknamed the Big Three.

Together they are read as a quick sketch of personality. The Sun is linked with identity and drive, the Moon with feelings and needs, and the rising sign with the way you meet the world and the first impression you give.

How the three layers fit together

A common image is a house. The rising sign is the front door and the porch that visitors see first. The Sun is the main room where you spend your days, and the Moon is the private space you return to when you are tired or upset.

When all three share an element, such as three water signs, the personality is often read as consistent and easy to recognize. When they belong to different elements, astrologers describe a person with several distinct modes who may come across differently to strangers, coworkers and close friends.

Reading a mixed combination

Look first at how the three relate. A fire Sun with an earth Moon, for example, is often described as bold in public but steady and practical in private. An air rising over a water Sun may be read as someone who seems light and chatty while feeling things deeply underneath.

None of these layers is more real than the others. Astrology treats them as parts of one person that take turns leading in different settings. The zodiac elements page explains the four elements if you want a framework for comparing your three signs.

What each placement needs from you

The three points move at very different speeds, so the data they require differs too. The Sun stays in a sign for about a month, so a date usually settles it. The Moon spends about two and a half days in each sign, so on a day when it changed signs the time decides the answer.

The rising sign changes roughly every two hours, which means it needs an exact time and the birthplace. We look up your city's coordinates and time zone, convert the time to UTC and then compute all three positions with Astronomy Engine.

Going further than three

Once your Big Three feel familiar, the next layer is usually the personal planets. Mercury, Venus and Mars are read as thinking, affection and drive. Each has its own page, such as the Venus sign calculator.

If you want the complete picture, the birth chart calculator draws every placement on a wheel, and the rising sign calculator goes deeper into the Ascendant alone.

Questions

What if my Big Three are all the same sign?

That happens when someone is born around sunrise near a New Moon. Astrologers read it as a very concentrated expression of that sign, with fewer contrasts between public and private sides.

Can I get a Big Three result without a birth time?

You will get your Sun sign and, on most days, your Moon sign. The rising sign cannot be calculated without a time, so that part stays blank until you add one.

Which of the three matters most?

Astrologers disagree, and it often depends on the question. Many read the Sun for purpose, the Moon for emotional habits and the rising sign for style and approach. Most agree the three make more sense together than alone.
