Goat, Sheep or Ram?
The eighth animal of the cycle goes by three names in English. The Chinese word covers goats and sheep alike, so books and calendars print Goat, Sheep or Ram, and all three mean the same sign.
We use Goat on this site. If a relative calls 2027 the Year of the Sheep, there is no disagreement: it is the same animal, the same element and the same dates.
How the 2027 year is calculated
Chinese years start on Lunar New Year. Our site computes that date with astronomy: we take the December solstice, find the second new moon after it, and read its date in China time. For 2027, that new moon lands on February 6, 2027.
The element comes from the last digit of the year. Years ending in 6 or 7 belong to Fire, and an odd final digit makes the year yin, so 2027 is Yin Fire. The animal follows the fixed order of twelve, and the Goat comes right after the Horse of 2026.
Because elements run in a 10-year cycle and animals in a 12-year cycle, the same Fire Goat pairing comes around only once every 60 years. The previous Fire Goat year was 1967, and the next one after 2027 will be 2087.
Born in January 2027 or January 2028?
This is where most confusion happens. A baby born between January 1 and February 5, 2027 arrives before the 2027 Lunar New Year, so in Chinese tradition that birth belongs to the Fire Horse year that began on February 17, 2026.
The opposite happens at the other end. Births from January 1 to January 25, 2028 still fall inside the Fire Goat year, even though the Western calendar already says 2028. From January 26, 2028, the Earth Monkey year begins.
If you are checking a date close to either boundary, the Chinese zodiac calculator compares the exact birth date with the exact Lunar New Year date and gives the right animal.
The Goat in Chinese tradition
The Goat is traditionally described as gentle, kind and sensitive to beauty. Folk descriptions link it with art, craft, music and a love of a calm, comfortable home, and with people who care deeply for those close to them.
Tradition also names the softer edges of these qualities: a tendency to worry, to avoid conflict, or to wait for others to decide. The Goat is often pictured as someone who does best with steady support around them. Its fixed element, separate from the year element, is Earth, and the Goat hour is 1 pm to 3 pm.
In compatibility lore the Goat belongs to the harmony group with the Rabbit and the Pig, has the Horse as its secret friend, and sits opposite the Ox. You can read the full profile on the Year of the Goat page.
What Fire adds to the Goat
In the five element system, Fire is linked with warmth, visibility and expression. A yin Fire year is usually described as the quieter form of that flame: closer to a candle or lamp than a bonfire.
Paired with the Goat, tradition reads Fire as bringing more confidence and outward warmth to a sign usually seen as shy. There is also a neat fit in the generating cycle, where Fire feeds Earth, and Earth is the Goat's own fixed element. You can see how these cycles work on the Chinese zodiac elements page.
These are descriptions from the tradition, not forecasts. We do not publish predictions for 2027; the page explains how the year is defined and what the Goat and Fire stand for in Chinese astrology. The holiday itself is a family festival with its own customs, celebrated over about two weeks.
