Why the Dragon is the most admired sign
The Chinese dragon is nothing like the fire-breathing villain of European tales. It is a wise, powerful bringer of rain and good harvests, and for centuries it served as a symbol of the emperor.
In Chinese astrology, the Dragon sign inherits that prestige. It is linked with confidence, ambition, charisma, vision and big energy. Tradition also names its shadow: pride, impatience with slower people and a tendency to expect too much of everyone, itself included.
Dragon images fill parades, roofs and festival lanterns, which shows how loved the creature is. The Dragon hour runs from 7 am to 9 am.
Fifth place, by choice
Being able to fly, the Dragon should have won the Jade Emperor's race easily. Instead it arrived fifth, and when the Emperor asked why, it explained that it had stopped to bring rain to a dry village.
In some versions it also gave the struggling Rabbit a gust of wind to reach the bank. The story turns a slow finish into a portrait of the Dragon as generous and responsible, a powerful creature that uses its strength for others.
The Dragon in each element
Wood Dragon (the year starting in 2024, for example): described as creative, curious and more cooperative than other Dragons, with a gift for new ideas.
Fire Dragon (1976): the boldest of the five, linked with passion, ambition and a strong sense of mission. Tradition warns that it can be the most headstrong too.
Earth Dragon (1988): Earth is also the Dragon's fixed element, so this one is read as the most grounded, patient and organized Dragon.
Metal Dragon (2000): pictured as fearless and principled, very direct, and determined to see its plans through.
Water Dragon (2012): the calmest Dragon, associated with intuition, diplomacy and a willingness to share the spotlight.
Who stands with the Dragon
The Dragon shares a harmony group with the Rat and the Monkey, a trine associated with energy, intelligence and ambition. Tradition sees the three as quick to understand each other.
The Rooster is the Dragon's secret friend, and the Dog is its clash sign, across the wheel. Folk astrology contrasts the Dragon's grand vision with the Dog's realism and caution. You can pair any two animals on the compatibility page, which reports tradition rather than verdicts.
Dragon year dates, computed
The site lists each Dragon year with its exact first and last day. We compute these from Lunar New Year, the second new moon after the December solstice in China time.
If you were born in a Dragon year number but before that year's Lunar New Year, you belong to the Rabbit. The Chinese zodiac calculator checks this automatically, and the elements page explains how the year element is assigned.
